A new study has claimed that one-third of the most popular cancer treatment articles on social media contain misinformation.
The study, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, claims that most of the misinformation in these articles could harm cancer patients.
They often promote unproven treatments as alternatives to treatments that are supported by rigorous medical studies.
"We found misinformation is clearly prevalent in cancer articles on social media, and the vast majority of those pieces contain harmful information," Skyler Johnson, MD, Huntsman Cancer Institute.
The study also found that articles containing misinformation received more attention and had more engagement than factual pieces.
